As one of the few colleges to have a dedicated Arts Rep, there’s always something arty going on in Christ Church. The Arts Rep organizes regular free film nights in the JCR (complete with popcorn and snacks) and any other college-wide events. They’re also responsible for the JCR Picture Lending Scheme – this means that for a returnable deposit of £20, anyone in college can loan a picture for the academic year. With over 100 pictures available, ranging from paintings to prints to photographs, there should be something for all tastes!
The Arts Rep’s other big job is taking photographs when people arrive at Formal Fridays, organized with hall and the Food Rep. Formal Friday is the one time that it’s de rigueur to actually wear nice clothes to formal hall – it’s not compulsory but if you join in then you’re in with a chance of winning Facebook fame as ‘best dressed’ attendee.
Christ Church also has its very own Art Room and Music Room. The Art Room (at the top of the Old Library staircase) is open to all and is run by Peter Rhoades, the Christ Church art tutor. Peter organizes life drawing classes on Wednesdays and print making classes on Thursdays for a small fee – email him if you’re interested in coming along (email@example.com). The Music Room is located on the ground floor of Tom 4 and has a grand piano which can be booked out for practice – speak to the Porters if you’d like to book a time.
Every year Christ Church holds its own Arts Week, bringing together artists and performers from all over college and the wider university. Previous events during arts weeks have involved free classes in the Art Room, special lectures, Cathedral concerts and music recitals in the Picture Gallery.
While we’re on the Picture Gallery, don’t forget to make a visit! Christ Church is the only Oxbridge college to have a permanent art gallery open to the public and as Christ Church students we get in for free! They have an amazing collection of Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces and a huge collection of drawings by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Head to the basement of Canterbury 4 to soak it all up.
With our own Cathedral and choir, college also boasts the Christ Church Music Society (CCMS). They regularly host concerts in the Cathedral and Deanery showcasing the amazing musical talents of members of the House, both music students and not. During Christ Church Arts Week there’s often a whole week of events organized by CCMS.
